Nedanstående fick jag i dag som e-mail. Arrangemanget ligger nära i tiden.

Mine Victims Fund presents a conference on:
Mine Victim Assistance:
"THE WAY AHEAD"
Washington D.C. * April 14-15, 1998
Purpose of the Conference
"Define the scope of mine victim assistance existing in the world today, identify problems and shortfalls in the process and recommend strategies for the future"
The Treaty to Ban Land Mines has been signed, but millions of anti-personnel mines still lie in ambush around the world waiting to maim or kill innocent farmers and workers, many of them children. There is an emphasis on Humanitarian Demining removing those mines and getting the land back for use and development, but the carnage continues and with it the need for a global approach to mine victim assistance. More funds may now be available for working with the devastation caused by mines, but funding alone will not solve the problems facing those who have had their lives drastically altered by land mines. Gaps exist in the services provided in the field, programs have varying degrees of success and much must be done to adapt mine victim assistance to individual cultures.
The conference has six major objectives
Define the global need for assistance
Examine mine victim assistance programs internationally
Describe the ancillary services involved in mine victim assistance
Discuss the data available on mine victims and its use and acquisition
Examine sustainable services and how to provide them most effectively
Define funding requirements needed world-wide
At the end of the conference we hope to have contributed to developing
coordinated, long-term programs to meet the needs of those disabled by land mines.
The result of the conference presentations and meetings will be to provide the responsible United Nations agencies and government organizations sufficient program and innovative insights to assist in future planning and policy decisions. A significant benefit will be a new impetus to developing a set of international standards expected of mine victim assistance programs and creating new levels of quality assurance.
